About

This blog is dedicated to a specific audience–you, the prospective student interested in studying journalism or advertising in one of the best communication schools in the Midwest.

I am Michael Bugeja, director of the Greenlee School. And I’ll correspond directly through this blog with any prospective or transfer student who might like to study here. And there are plenty of you out there!

If you are among the 700-plus high school students who expressed interest this year in journalism, or the 150-plus interested in advertising, you will have received an email from me directing you to this blog. Perhaps one of our alumni or friends encouraged you to visit. (If so, contact Admissions and express interest in us formally so we can get you on our official rolls!)

I will answer questions here, field comments and otherwise encourage you to apply, be accepted and commit to coming to Ames, one of the nation’s 10 best places to live.

If you become one of our majors, you will be studying and practicing journalism, advertising and communication with some of the most accomplished students in the country–and we can back that up.

Our independent student newspaper, the Iowa State Daily, consistently is ranked as the best or in the top 10 such publications in the nation.

We broadcast out of two studios–one in the School and another in the Communications Building, where WOI Radio is housed.

Our student organizations regularly win national awards or compete for them with other top schools.

We have a recently remodeled building with state-of-the-art multimedia facilities and an integrated multimedia suite, compliments of Meredith Corporation, which employs almost 300 Iowa State alumni and dozens from our school.

And our teachers are award-winning, too. Just access their personal bios here.

There’s more good news for you and your parents if you’re worried about tuition. When you count scholarships, grants and other aid given to our students by the University, and add the tens of thousands extra we provide internally in tuition aid, our pre-majors and majors receive $1.2 million in support. And our out-of-state tuition rates compete well with in-state rates at Illinois and Minnesota colleges and universities.

We have one of the most modern converged curricula in the country, streamlined and rigorous. You’ll not only graduate in four years, if you put your mind to it (saving more money), you’ll also cap your education here with an internship working for such companies as MTV, 20/20, Jimmy Kimmel Live, ESPN, Better Homes and Gardens, Des Moines Register, Lee Enterprises, Scripps, CNN, Sports Illustrated, USA Today, KCCI, WHO and dozens of other community, regional and national outlets in advertising, broadcasting, multimedia, public relations, newspapers, magazines, and science and visual communication.

So climb the Greenlee success ladder and visit here often to check for news, links to financial aid or just to ask me questions. If you’re a top student in your school and recently achieved a goal, tell us about it. In fact, why don’t you tell us in person and schedule a prospective student visit? Just go to this site at Admissions and start the process for becoming a Cyclone journalist, communicator or advertiser!
